2008 YALSA President's Program - Between Home & School: The Teen Third Space

I was so happy to be a part of YALSA's President's Program at the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA on June 30. Thanks to Paula Brehm-Heeger, Sarah Debraski, and Carrie Bryniak for having the program idea and asking me to participate. I was honored.

I also was quite moved by Sarah's speech at the beginning of the program. I feel very fortunate to be part of a group of people who are so inspired by teens.

As I mentioned in my presentation, strong teen service (including the creation of teen third space) is critical to the success of 21st century public and school libraries. As data and success stories related to teen space and service throughout the U.S. and abroad are revealed, it is evident that teen service is transitioning (and has already transitioned in many cases) from being ignored and inconsequential to being essential, inspirational, and a model to other areas of library service.

As promised, here is the link to my presentation. It can also be found on the ALA Conference Materials Archive. Kelly Tyler has also blogged about it on the YALSA blog.

The additional resources listed at the end of the presentation include:

- PPS – Project for Public Spaces

- My new book Teen Spaces (2nd ed.) - ALA Editions, Fall 2008

- The Innovation Center - Youth in Decision-Making: A Study on the Impacts of Youth on Adults and Organizations

Additional information on London (Ontario, Canada) Public Library's LOLLYPOP (Learning, Literacy and Leadership for our Youth POPulation) program will be available in a separate post.

Thank you so much for the work that you do. I'm really excited to rethink our teen space. I'm looking over your first book now and really looking forward to the updated edition.

I've been frustrated by my lack of budget, but now I'm determined not to let that stop me. I'll start small and branch out from there.
